British Foreign Secretary, David Miliband says that “respect for minority rights is absolutely a vital part of the values that are essential to society” In a video message to a group of Sri Lankans living in the UK the foreign secretary said that although the European Union wants to have an open and engaged trading relationship with Sri Lanka the absence of key human rights has forced the suspension of the GSP plus (Generalised System of Preferences) trade concession. Milliband said that he very much hopes that the Sri Lankan government will address human rights issues urgently. [
