Sri Lankan protest over Jaffna displaced
| Date: 20000412
A one-day strike called by human-rights groups has paralysed the northern Sri Lankan town of Jaffna.
The activists are demanding the safe return of almost two-thousand civilians who've been trapped for over two weeks by heavy fighting between Sri Lankan forces and separatist Tamil Tiger rebels.
Military officials deny they're forcing people to stay in the combat zone -- but say security checks have caused delays in allowing free travel within the peninsula.
The strike cae on the eve of the country's traditional New Year celebrations.
